Female Artist - Judy Chicago

Judy Chicago is one of the founding members of feminist art, as she has been challenging the male-centric art world since the 1970s. She is an artist, author, feminist, and educator whose career spans over five decades. Her works include paintings, sculptures, and mixed -media to celebrate women's achievements. She was born in 1939 in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up in a liberal environment as both her Jewish parents were openly articulated in their left-winged politics. Chicago officially changed her last name after becoming a widow at the age of 23. She created art that recognized significant female historical figures, and she sought to add women to the history books by enhancing their representation in the visual world.

Chicago's most celebrated work is The Dinner Party(1974-79), which praises women from the margins of society and history. The installation piece (a table in the shape of a triangle) features 39 place settings meant to represent famous women from the past, including Joan of Arc, Susan B Anthony, and the Primordial Goddess. Aside from the place settings, there are 99 names engraved on the floor. This mixed-media installation is composed of ceramics, embroidery, weaving, and text, all meant to bring what was considered female mediums to "high" art. Aside from The Dinner Party, she helped found Womanhouse, a feminist gallery in Los Angeles. Womanhouse was an outgrowth of the Feminist Art Program, it was an installation and performance space dedicated to the female creative expression.
