Marah Siyam- Mini Post 1

Raeda Saadeh

Raeda Saadeh is a Palestinian female artist that works mainly in photography and installation art. She was born in Jerusalem under heavy Isreali occupation which means living within apartheid, curfews, constant clashes, etc. This is reflected in her work which is her form of resistance to the occupation. Raeda also creates art about Palestinian gender roles and women in politics. One of her most famous photos is her version of the Mona Lisa by Leonardo Da Vinci. In her version “Mona Lisa” is instead replaced with herself and her background is occupied Jerusalem. The background shows the apartheid wall and the many physical barriers the Isreali military has created in Jerusalem and all over Palestine.

Another example of Raeda’s subtle yet powerful resistance movements is her work titled The concrete foot-crossroads. This work shows Raeda with a block of concrete holding down her foot. This work speaks on the gender roles that hold down Palestinian women but also how the occupation hinders the lives of women even more. With constant unlawful imprisonment of Palestinian men this leaves women alone oftentimes with children and no income. Raeda represents the Palestinian female struggle under occupation both beautifully and tragically, and she continues to be a voice and an inspiration to Palestinian women in Palestine and diaspora.
