Can you name 5 women artists?

Concentrating on modern and contemporary artists and possibly inspired by current events and on your journal writing during this pandemic, choose 5 women artists that are connected by a common theme. Themes we have discussed throughout the course include but are not limited to: gender inequality, race, class, religion, power, body, spirituality, empowerment, war, injustice. You can choose from this short list or another theme you find compelling. You can also organize your post by genre, 'isms, political or societal messages, aesthetics, techniques or personal narratives. Choose a clear theme and thesis for your post. How do the 5 artists or artworks fit into the theme? How are the artworks connected? Be sure to include at least one contemporary artist still working today. Illustrate your post with various images (and/or videos) and to cite your research from Chadwick and any additional sources.

~700 words, citations and 'works cited' and 5+ images with captions. See checklist from previous posts for additional guidance.

Group presentations (groups 4,5,6,7):

will be due on the blog (and presented in the class session) on a revised schedule. I will discuss this further in the class session. Work together offline to create a "performance" that can be shared on the blog and in the class online session. You can record a zoom session, use Google slides with audio - or present in class live, make a video, etc.

Keep a journal (daily or almost daily) you DO NOT need to share any of this writing. I want you to keep this for your selves. You can share any part you would like on the blog or on twitter at anytime but this is not required.

One final writing assignment:

The final short essay will ask you to connect your journal writing to some of the artists and artwork we have learned throughout the semester. The writing assignment will be due 4/23. The assignment will be posted on the sidebar by 4/8.

Final Exam:

Details to be determined - the exam will be given in the online class session. A study guide will still be provided several weeks before the exam.

Stay Safe and STAY HOME!!! I miss all of you very much. Right now it is so important that we stay away from each other entirely. Quarantine if you can, even if you are feeling well. If you cannot quarantine, please take extreme precautions to slow the spread of this dangerous virus. If you are feeling sick STAY HOME and quarantine yourself completely. Staying home even if you are well can save your life and that of many others.

LIST OF NEWS SOURCES to stay informed during this complicated and urgent crisis. Stick to reputable sources to avoid misinformation.

As for moving forward with class online: we will be using Blackboard Collaborate Ultra OR Zoom for class this Tuesday 3/24 at 10am. I will update all of you and post a link to the class session in Blackboard announcements and in Blackboard email before Tuesday. Please keep a look out and check announcements on Blackboard.

Gender Roles, Subject and Power

What were the expected roles of women in Europe in the Middle Ages? How did roles for women change throughout the Renaissance and into the 19C? Please explain how these roles influenced the lives of women artists and the subjects of their work. Citing references to the readings, please use examples through the 19C to illustrate the challenges women artists faced. How did they overcome these or reference them in their work?

~750-1000 words. Include citations of the class readings in your post (Chadwick and Guerrilla Girls). Please be sure to include at least three images and two links. See checklist below for other issues to consider and include in your post.

What is the male gaze (as described by John Berger) and why is it pervasive in art and in popular culture? Give illustrative examples. What is patriarchy (as described by bell hooks)? Give examples. How have you come to understand these structures and in what ways has this understanding changed your views about various art and media examples and of your own identity and role in these structures?

What contemporary arguments can you find that have sprung from these?
